Throughout Robby’s tattoo career and dedicated study to visual art, he developed his textured, surrealist black and grey tattooing style. It features grotesque yet gorgeously rendered horrors covered with teeth, tentacles, and horns. Robby’s tattoos often evoke raw, visceral emotions: disgust, sadness, anger, and loss. His ability to render an emotional experience within his work is masterful. His technical tattoo study and understanding of light and shadow allow him to invent finely detailed subjects sculpted by textures and compose atmospheres within the skin that seem to contain the subjects and draw the eye deeper in. A man of humble appearance and friendly demeanor, Robby’s love for the craft and tradition of tattooing is apparent in his actions with the community and his interactions with clients, peers, and students.
